    Key Points

Ten players run speedily around the court. Although team play is very important, the state of a game can change very quickly as all players in a team basically play offense or defence, and they are required to make split-second decisions. Such split-second tactics are among the attractions of the sport. Not only team plays but also individual plays are extremely noticeable. Basketball fans dare not take their eyes off the game for fear of missing a player's skilful ball control, playmaking and breathtaking shots. One-on-one matchups and shooting are also among the attractions of basketball.

Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 in the USA, who developed the game in a physical education class at a YMCA winter school he visited. NBA and WNBA games in the USA are very popular across the world. Basketball was introduced as an Olympic sport at the Berlin 1936 Olympic Games. The fact that the sport became a demonstration sport 32 years prior to the time at the Saint Louis 1904 Olympic Games is testament to the popularity of basketball in the USA. Women's basketball made its Olympic debut at the Montreal 1976 Games.
