The Economic Effects of the Tokyo 2020 Games

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has calculated the estimated economic and other effects associated with holding the Tokyo 2020 Games as follows (as of 6 March 2017):

Overview of the Estimation

◆Period of analysis
From 2013 (the year Tokyo was selected to host the 2020 Summer Olympics) until 2030 (ten years after the Tokyo 2020 Games)

◆Areas included in analysis
Tokyo and Japan (increase in demand estimated only for Tokyo)

◆Estimate of the economic effects
Calculated using the latest Input-output table (2011 Input-output table for Tokyo) and including secondary indirect effects.

The Estimated Effects

◆An increase in demand: Approx. 14 trillion yen in Tokyo.
 ・Direct effects: Estimated approx. 2 trillion yen through an increase in demand caused by investments and expenditures directly related the hosting of the Games.
