Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay Overview
The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay plays an important role during the transition period from the Olympic Games to the Paralympic Games. It will aim to create a festive atmosphere in the run-up to the Paralympic Games while maintaining the momentum generated by the Olympic Games and deliver the Paralympic spirit and values to everyone.
The concept of Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay, “Share Your Light,” expresses the idea that light becomes a source of hope and support for people in society who gather and encounter one another and can serve to illuminate the way to coexistence.
The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Torch Relay will be held nationwide for 13 days from 12 to 24 August 2021, and will finish the day of the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. It is scheduled to be held in Tokyo for five days from 20 to 24 August. On 20 August, the Paralympic flame lighting festival, flame visits, and torch relay are scheduled during daytime, and the ceremony at night, the flames from each flame lighting festival and the torch relays from all over Japan and the flame from Stoke Mandeville (UK), where the birthplace of the Paralympic Games, will be brought together in Tokyo, where the official Paralympic Flame will be lit. The final four days of the Paralympic Torch Relay will then commence in Tokyo from 21 to 24 August.
Three torchbearers will meet for the first time and run as a team in each area.
