The Recovery and Reconstruction Games

During Tokyo’s campaign to host the 2020 Games which began in 2011, the Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee advocated the power of sport to bring hope and dreams to the areas affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The origins of the Tokyo 2020 Games are Olympic and Paralympic Games aimed at recovery and reconstruction. The power of sport will raise the spirits of the residents of these affected areas and provide them with hope and inspiration. We will communicate the spirit and determination of the local residents who have overcome many forms of adversity and are steadfastly working towards reconstruction of the areas, as well as communicating our gratitude to the people of the world for their support and encouragement.

Introduction of initiatives

Reconstruction support video

We will produce videos that will convey the current state of the disaster-affected areas that are making powerful progress toward recovery, and share them with the world.

  • See you in Tokyo and Tohoku in 2020

  • See you in Tokyo and Kumamoto in 2020

  • 2020 and Beyond, Thank you to the World

Invitation project for children watching the affected areas

The children from Iwate Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture, Fukushima Prefecture as well as from Kumamoto Prefecture which was severely damaged by a large-scale earthquake in 2016, will be invited to watch the competitions of Tokyo 2020 Games. We aim to make the Tokyo 2020 Games “a legacy of the heart" for them by actually watching both power and technique of top athletes and experiencing the excitement of the competition.

Reconstruction prayer tree planting

Trees as the symbol of recovery and reconstruction in Iwate Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture, Fukushima Prefecture and Kumamoto Prefecture, will be planted on the site of the Ariake Arena, one of the competition venues of the Tokyo 2020 Games. We will widely disseminate that the Tokyo 2020 Games are the “The Recovery and Reconstruction Games“, as well as pass on the principles of the Games to future generations through the growth of trees with thoughts for reconstruction.

Monument of Tokyo 2020 reconstruction

The Tokyo 2020 Recovery Monuments will express, from Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures affected by the earthquake and tsunami toward the world, “their gratitude for the support” and “support towards athletes who will compete in the Games”
And the monuments will be displayed at an Olympic and Paralympic Games-related venue in Tokyo during the Tokyo 2020 Games.
The monuments will be made from recycling the aluminum used for window frames of temporary housing units.
The monument design was decided with the local student at the workshops held in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima.
After the Games, the monuments will return to Tohoku as a legacy of ““Recovery and Reconstruction Game”.
