Host Towns and Pre-Games Training Camps
Host Towns
In order to contribute to making Japan a "Sports Nation", promote globalisation, the revitalisation of local areas, and inbound tourism toward the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, the Government of Japan has a registration system for municipalities in Japan that wish to be Host Towns willing to engage in human, economic and cultural exchanges with participating countries and regions. As of August 2021, 15 wards and 15 cities in Tokyo have registered as the Host Towns.
Pre-Games Training Camps
A pre-Games training camp is held by each country’s National Olympic Committees (NOCs), National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) and International Sport Federations (IFs) of participating countries and regions to provide opportunities for their athletes to adjust themselves to the time difference and climate of Japan prior to the Tokyo 2020 Games. The pre-Games training camps under the ideal environment allows athletes to prepare their best performance in the Tokyo 2020 Games. This also has a potential for the participating municipalities to promote regional revitalisation and international exchange.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) supported municipalities preparing for the pre-Games training camps in cooperation with the government of Japan and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee to deliver safe and secure pre-Games training camps for both athletes and residents.
